Contracting listeria could lead to a products liability claim

Do Pennsylvania residents know what Listeria monocytogenes is? Many people may see the words attached to numerous food recalls, but may not really understand what it is and what harm it could cause. To put it simply, Listeria could become a serious enough health issue that an individual harmed by it could seek financial restitution through the filing of a products liability claim.

Listeriosis is a food-borne illness caused by eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. In pregnant women (and newborns), older adults and others whose immune systems are compromised, the infection can become serious and even life-threatening. Periodically, someone that does not fall into one of these categories suffers a serious infection as well.

A recent article about the recall of burritos produced by Green Chile Food Company, symptoms of Listeriosis were described as including muscle aches, fever and a stiff neck. Sufferers may also include a variety of gastrointestinal issues, convulsions and confusion, among other things. Anyone with these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately -- especially pregnant women since their unborn children could also be at risk. The infection can be treated with antibiotics if caught in time.

Any Pennsylvania resident who suffers from listeriosis may be able to trace the infection to a contaminated food product. If that is the case, then it may help to discuss the circumstances leading to the illness with a products liability attorney. After reviewing the situation, medical records and other relevant evidence, it may be appropriate to file a claim against the parties believed responsible for letting a product or products contaminated with listeria monocytogenes into the market place.
