Hidden camera exposes nursing home neglect

Many Pennsylvania families come to an impasse when they can no longer care for the elderly members of their families. They do as much research as possible to find a place that will provide safety, care and compassion to their loved ones. Unfortunately, nursing home neglect occurs far too often.

One out-of-state woman suspected that her father was the victim of neglect, so she put a hidden camera in his room. What she saw led her to go public and accuse the nursing home of neglecting him. Her 94-year-old father is blind and suffers from dementia. He is supposed to get help with eating, dressing and other basic needs.

The video she took shows a worker eating the lunch meant for him while he sleeps. It also shows that food was being brought to his room and just left there despite her instructions and her father's needs. Furthermore, his clothes were not changed regularly, and an odor indicated that he had not been changed in some time.

Her father also appeared to be thirsty often. He began drinking a small cup of syrup because he was so thirsty. Other footage showed that he fell out of bed, and it took hours for someone to check on him and find him. The Minnesota nursing home says that it is now working with the family and its staff to rectify the situation, but what about other residents?

In fact, what about other residents in other nursing homes across the country, including those here in Pennsylvania? Families who suspect, or know, that their elderly loved ones are suffering at the hands of staff who do not provide them with the care, respect and compassion they deserve need to be held accountable. That might mean filing a lawsuit alleging nursing home neglect in order to bring these issues to light and provide hurting families with the restitution they deserve.
