Spinal injuries are a very serious concern within the workplace

For Pennsylvania workers, suffering a significant spinal cord injury can have a lasting impact on health and well-being. Not only will one’s ability to earn a satisfactory living be in jeopardy, meeting basic needs may also be inhibited, particularly when a spinal injury entails certain life-altering symptoms. The Mayo Clinic provides insight into the severity of spinal cord injuries, along with which symptoms should be taken most seriously.

Injuries to the spinal cord can have a range of effects depending on just where an injury actually takes place, which can be gauged by the remaining functionality underneath the area receiving damage. For instance, some victims may experience a complete loss of functionality in the areas falling below an injury, while others may only suffer from partial loss. While paralysis is not always a factor, in serious cases a total loss of movement to all limbs (known as quadriplegia) can occur. In addition to loss of sensation and an inability to control limb function, victims can also experience nerve damage, which in turn can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort.

When an injury occurs, the need for urgent medical attention can be assessed by looking for particular signs of damage. Any sort of numbness or weakness occurring within the extremities should be taken seriously, as this can indicate a significant level of injury that must be addressed immediately. Losing control of one’s bladder and bowel is also extremely troubling, as are any obvious issues with breathing. In the event of these symptoms, emergency medical services should be sought immediately to prevent the initial injury from becoming exacerbated.

While some injuries simply cannot be prevented, there are certain steps that can be taken within a workplace to reduce the occurrence of such accidents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that all workers are regularly trained in proper procedures, including the ability to identify and remove any obvious risks. Encouragement of healthy living can also play a role, as some physical factors and health conditions can serve to worsen spinal injuries.

Proper legal representation is recommended for those suffering from any type of on-the-job injury. Even seemingly minor injuries can have a lasting effect on one’s health, which is why seeking the guidance of a knowledgeable personal injury firm is greatly encouraged.
