Top preventable workplace accidents

David Letterman has long made a living cracking jokes, doing interviews with celebrities and reading off a Top Ten list every night. We're not going to emulate the master of sarcasm and wit, but we are going to take a look at a list of the top preventable workplace accidents.

Workplace injuries are far too common, often requiring the injured worker to take time to recuperate, and often necessitating applying for Pennsylvania workers' compensation benefits at one of the offices in Pittsburgh, Erie and elsewhere.

According to the National Safety Council, some of the top preventable workplace accidents include the following:

  • Falling object injuries: these happen often in industry, as well as in construction. In manufacturing, stacked and stored supplies can fall off of shelves and in construction, items can come loose from roofs, ceilings and while being held aloft by equipment
  • Falling from heights: this is an incident common in construction, but not exclusively in that line of work
  • Slipping or tripping: wet floors, uneven pathways on a jobsite, ice, etc., can cause muscle injuries, back problems and other medical issues
  • Overexertion: muscle, back and neck injuries are a real danger when lifting, pulling, pushing heavy objects

In most cases, injured workers apply for and promptly receive the benefits they are due. However, in some circumstances, an insurer or employer (or both) will attempt to deny you the workers' comp benefits you need. That's when an experienced workers' comp attorney who knows the law, the system, the forms and the paperwork can start fighting for you, your rights and your compensation.
