On the road this summer? Drive Safely Around Semi-Trucks

Arriving safely at your summer vacation spot is essential. Before hitting the road keep in mind that highway driving is full of hazards, one of which is the semi truck.  These vehicles operate differently than regular passenger vehicles, a fact that must be remembered when sharing the road with these beasts.

Semi trucks are physically so much larger than all the other vehicles on the road.  They have huge blind spots.  To be safe you should never travel in the truck's blind spots.  Tip:  look at the driver's mirror, if you cannot see the driver than he probably cannot see you either!

Never tailgate any vehicle but especially semi-trucks.  The trucks are so tall and wide you cannot see what is in front of the truck.  If traffic is stopped ahead of the truck you would have no way of knowing if you are right on the truck's bumper.  Tip:  Slow down and back up so you can view the traffic and the roadway up ahead.

Never cut off a semi truck (or any other vehicle).  Semi trucks carry heavy loads, they require a lot of space to come to a stop, up to a football field in length!  Tip:  Be a courteous driver and never cut off a vehicle.  Put on your turn signal and make sure the lane is clear before switching lanes.

Stay safe out there and happy travels!
