Do you know the difference between UM and UIM Insurance Coverage?

Auto insurance policy terminology can be confusing.  Below is quick breakdown of UM and UIM Motorist Insurance Coverage.

UM stands for Uninsured Motorist.  This type of coverage will pay you benefits it you are injured in an accident caused by a driver who does not have an auto insurance policy.  This coverage will also pay benefits it you are injured in an accident where the at fault driver left the scene of the accident or your injuries are the result of a hit-and-run accident.

UIM stands for Under insured motorist.  This type of coverage will pay you benefits if you are injured in an accident by a driver who has an auto insurance policy but that policy does not have enough coverage to fully compensate you for your injuries.

UM and UIM Coverage is auto insurance coverage that protects you from a negligent driver--it provides benefits to you NOT the other driver.  Both UM and UIM coverage is optional in Pennsylvania, however, it is a good idea to add this coverage to your auto policy as the cost is usually quite minimal.

So . . . do you know the difference between UM and UIM Insurance Coverage?  Now you do!
