Pennsylvania Governor offers award to lessen workplace accidents

It is common for both employers and workers to strive for the highest standards of safety possible in the workplace. That is because an industrial accident may do more than just cause injury or death to workers. It may also have financial implications for the employer in terms of workmen's compensation, as well as fines if the work accident can be attributed to employer negligence.

Given the importance of workplace safety, it may be a good idea for state governments to offer incentives to the employers who actually take the safety of their workers seriously and do all that they can to minimize the chances of a work accident. This is precisely what Governor Tom Corbett has been trying to achieve in Pennsylvania.

Corbett has recently announced the Governor's Award for Safety Excellence to ten Pennsylvanian employers, who have achieved the highest standards in workplace safety. The application process for this award is highly competitive and the winners are selected on several factors including injuries or illnesses occurring in the workplace and coming up with new and strategic policies relating to safety.

The award also takes into consideration thriving programs relating to employee safety that have been put in place by the employer to produce concrete safety enhancement. The rationale behind offering such an award is to ensure that the number of Pennsylvanian workers suffering on-the-job injuries is kept to a minimum. While the effort on the governor's part is indeed a laudable one, workers should still be aware of their legal rights and available recourses in case of an accident in the industrial workplace.
