Defective fire escape allegedly causes personal injury and death

Recently, a complaint was filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas against a property owner for failing to properly maintain a fire escape.  The fire escape collapsed while in use, causing the death of one of the users and personal injury to another.  This lawsuit claims that the fire escape was not properly maintained and corrosion caused it to become structurally unsound.

Property owners are required to properly maintain and repair buildings, sidewalks, and fire escapes to make sure that the building and surrounding areas are safe for visitors.  Unfortunately, all too often property owners neglect repairs to fire escapes and personal injury results.  Metal fire escapes affixed to the exterior of buildings need frequent maintenance, especially in this region with the harsh weather.

This tragic incident hopefully will not repeat itself.  Property owners and tenants alike should be on the look out for maintenance issues and take remedial action before injury occurs.
