Salt pile collapses and kills Pennsylvania worker

Workplace accidents occur more frequently than we care to think. The causes are wide-ranging, but many involve an unsafe working environment and/or a safety hazard. Many times, accidents are prevented by safety measure implemented by an employer and regulated by state and federal work safety standards. But sometimes these measures are not implemented properly, equipment is inadequately maintained, and workers are improperly trained. When such an oversight happens, workers are put at extreme risk of injury and death.

Sadly, one Pennsylvania worker may have learned this firsthand. Prior to a massive snowstorm, a worker at a suburban Philadelphia storage was killed when a 100-foot-tall pile of salt collapsed on him. The man was operating a backhoe at the site and became trapped when the salt fell on him. Rescue efforts were made, but crews could not reach the victim before he passed. The exact cause of the accident remains unknown at this time.

Though not every work accident is fatal, this one helps shed light on how tragic they can be. But even those who are injured but survive a workplace accident can face serious hardship. An injury may require medical attention, cause severe pain and leave an individual unable to work. When one finds him or herself in this situation, money can get tight.

Workers' compensation should help alleviate some the financial strain associated with a workplace accident, but sometimes these claims are denied. Instead of accepting the denial, an injured worker should seek to challenge it. A Pennsylvania attorney may be able to help by providing strong legal arguments that seek to satisfy the elements required to award workers' compensation benefits. Hopefully then the worker will get the care he or she needs to get back to normal life while at the same time raising awareness of the dangers posed by unsafe working conditions.
