Toyota issues yet another recall for dangerous auto defects

In the past couple of years, the motor vehicle manufacturing industry has been plagued by controversy. Auto defects ranging from ignition switches to airbags meant the recall of millions of vehicles all over the country (including many here in Pennsylvania) and across many makes and models of vehicles. Now, yet another recall has been issued -- this time by Toyota.

The auto manufacturer currently limits the recall to approximately 228,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks for model years 2016 and 2017. According to the company, a defect in the rear differential causes the vehicle to leak oil. Without proper lubrication, the differential could seize, which could cause a driver to lose control and crash. The longer the defect goes unrepaired, the louder the noise from the rear differential will become, thus compromising the operation of the vehicle.

Toyota plans to inform all potentially affected owners by around the middle of June. At that time, owners are urged to go to their nearest Toyota dealer to have the issue diagnosed and fixed. In the meantime, Tacoma owners here in Pennsylvania and elsewhere need to take care while driving their vehicles. Unfortunately, the longer Toyota waits to inform owners, the greater the potential for catastrophe.

The automaker says that no reports of crashes have been received so far. However, as happens with other auto defects, the potential remains. Individuals could suffer serious injuries or even death. Any owner of a Toyota Tacoma who experiences a loss of control and accident due to a leaking rear differential might be able to seek restitution from the manufacturer.
