Industrial workers face high risk of falls

If you are an industrial or construction worker in Pennsylvania, you know firsthand the risk falls can pose within your workplace. This is especially true if you regularly work from rooftops or scaffolding, which are known as a common cause of injury among many workers. Here at Friday & Cox LLC, we know the risks that exist, which can lead to a fall and serious injury.

According to The Center for Construction Research and Training, many workers throughout the construction industry face a significant chance of injuries related to falls. You are especially at risk if you work with the installation of power lines, you are a roofer, or you install metal beams in buildings like skyscrapers.

You should be aware of the risk of falls no matter your age or occupation. However, if you are in the older worker age bracket, 55 years or higher, you are more likely to be injured or killed as the result of a fall. It is estimated that older workers experience fatal falls more often than younger counterparts when involved in roof construction and repair. This is a trend seen throughout the construction industry; the rate of older workers who were killed in falls during a five-year period amounted to one fifth.

These statistics are especially concerning when considering that the construction workforce continues to age rapidly. As a result, there is a call for improved prevention methods to lessen the occurrence of workplace falls, as well as a push to ensure that older workers are afforded on-the-job duties that meet their capabilities.
