Hittin' the Road: Speaking at Continuing Legal Education Seminars

In representing our clients, we travel around Western Pennsylvania from Pittsburgh to Erie to Smethport to Bellefonte to Bedford and beyond on a daily basis.  While driving around, I (Paul G. Mayer, Jr.) try to take a minute every once and awhile to appreciate the beautiful scenery and interesting people of our Commonwealth.  in "Hittin' the Road with Friday & Cox", I'll give you the highlights.  Hope you enjoy it.

Last Tuesday I had the opportunity to be a speaker at a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Program on Worker Compensation Law & Practice in Upper St. Clair, south of Pittsburgh. Every year attorneys in Pennsylvania are required to take CLE classes amounting to 12 credit hours.  The classes are a great way for attorneys to keep up to date on legal topics.

At this recent seminar I spoke on the topics of "Recent Decisions" and "Settlement of Workers Compensation Cases." This is something I've been doing for the last few years, and I really look forward to it. I think it's, in part, a result of my secret desire to be a stand up comedian, but more so, I enjoy passing on some of the things you learn through experience to folks who don't yet have that experience. For example, settlement negotiations are a critical part of your job as an attorney in workers comp, automobile accidents and other injury cases. After negotiating settlements for more than 30 years you acquire insights about how to get the best deal for your client in any given situation, which you just don't have coming out of law school. While the downside of experience is that you're older by the time you get it, there's no substitute for it. The seminar was held at the Crown Plaza hotel, a beautiful facility across from South Hills Village mall.
